Getting Started

–  As you reflect on Sunday’s message, what one principle or insight stands out as being particularly helpful, insightful, or difficult to grasp?

–  Has there ever been a time when Jesus didn’t meet your expectations? Describe.

Digging Deeper

Read John 11:1-32

– Clearly, Jesus did not meet Mary’s expectations. What were Mary’s expectations? Why do you think she had these expectations?

– What was Jesus’ reaction?

– What were some causes of the differing expectations between Mary and Jesus?

Read Matthew 9:1-13

– Jesus failed to meet the Pharisees’ expectations. What were the Pharisees’ expectations? Why do you think they had those expectations?

– What was Jesus’ reaction?

– What were some causes of the differing expectations between the Pharisees and Jesus?

– What can we learn from these two examples about how our expectations of Jesus are formed?

– What do these examples teach us about how Jesus operates in relation to our expectations?

Taking It Home

– Reflect on your answer in the “Getting Started” section. How were your expectations of Jesus formed?

– If Jesus were able to directly respond to your story, what do you think his response would be to you? Why?

– After picturing Jesus’ response (above), do you see the situation any differently? Explain.

– In what ways is this helpful to you when it comes to dealing with disappointment in Jesus? What questions do you still have?

– What would you say to someone else who expresses disappointment in Christ due to his or her expectations not being met?
